Key Takeaways

  • Templates make things go faster
  • Self-pacing, skipping weekends, and timed delivery are the gold standard of EBC automations
  • Building self-pacing is simple but occasionally painstaking (in other words: check your work).

Hi,

It's time to build (your automations).

If you haven't already picked this up... I'm a bit of an obsessive person

I tend to go a little overboard.

Set me on a path and I can't help but want to see how far it goes.

This has been my approach with email course automations. And in my pursuit of delivering amazing learning experiences through email, the automations were where I got the most feedback early on (better than people complaining about the content I guess!).

In this email you're going to learn about the gold standard of EBC automations

That means self-pacing, skipping weekends, and designating send times.

We'll start with a quick video from the amazing tech-savvy Will, on using Templates in MailerLite and then we'll move into the construction of the automations.

This video will show you how to build the main course automation(s)

In Kit, it's one big one. In Mailerlite, it's multiple email-specific ones (I actually think the Mailerlite system is a bit easier, but you can't edit email content while the automation is turned on and that can be annoying).

In Mailerlite we're going to...

  • Cover the conceptual side of self-pacing
  • Set up email specific automation templates
  • Clone the templates and the settings on each
  • Edit the links in the emails that power self-pacing

In Kit we're going to...

  • Build an automation structure that enables self-pacing
  • Set up link actions
  • Show you where to check your work

That thing I forgot to mention

I made a comment in the video about how to skip weekends.

I think it's important to share the fact that I only start skipping weekends after the first few emails. This is out of courtesy for the folks who sign up on Saturdays. Lucky them.

Final word of caution

Self-pacing requires some testing.

Two years in and weΒ stillΒ catch little issues in my courses (thanks to our dedicated customers). That said, if you can get it working and make use of those transitions... the payoff is definitely worth it.

Check out the videos from Will for each platform below (they're also linked in the EBC builder).
